Running on hope

We’re running on hope

As a diesel truck runs on its last fumes

Before it reaches what it used to call home

When we should be running on something real

We’re running on the past

As one drives that last few miles on something we once felt

As if it mattered for more than that once moment

When we should be running on something real

We’re running on distant memories

Like when one tries to catch those last few moments of the dream

Just before we wake up

We’re running on memories

When we should be running on moments

We should be running on something real

You ask me “Why aren’t you crying?”

I answer “Because then I’ll never stop”

I know God is present right here, and we can move from faith to an intimate knowledge of who He is and how He operates. But I think hope, the past, even distant memories ARE real.

And. Today was real. My meeting with Sikelelwa, as well as our coffee in the cold wind. Two moments in one day for me to run on.

… I guess I’m saying, ek wonder of jy God miskyk in die klein goedjies?

Wanneer het ek gese daar was niks real voor my in daai conversation nie??
